Dyslexia As A Disability?

If I’m dyslexic, am I disabled or is the system disabled? I’ve been pondering this question recently.

In the UK, and in a lot of different countries worldwide, if you’re dyslexic then you are given the category of ‘disabled.’

When I went to University ten years ago for the second time I was assessed for dyslexia and was diagnosed as being significantly dyslexic. The assessor said that I now had the rights of a disabled person. This felt really strange to me because I was as intelligent as the people around me but because I had the ‘label’ of dyslexia I now had a disability.

Personal View

Personally, I don’t see my dyslexia as a disability. I think of myself as differently abled and I’m wondering if it’s okay to label people as disabled if they have dyslexia.

My answer at the moment is yes, it is okay to label dyslexics as disabled but that’s because it’s the school system that is disabled. On the whole, it doesn’t have the ability to help the 1 in 10 people who think differently with their different ability.

It helps me to flip the situation and to say, yes there is a disability but that disability is not mine but the educations system’s disability to deliver what it wants me to have.

For a person in a wheelchair the school has a responsibility to make sure there is a ramp to accommodate their different ability. With dyslexia that different ability is more hidden but it still needs to be accommodated.

What is the ‘ramp’ that dyslexics need to fully access school and their education?

My field of expertise is in mindmapping and not dyslexia. I know that dyslexia experts are asking this sort of question right now.

I know what it’s like to live with dyslexia though, and I’ve unconsciously spent the last 25-30 years finding workarounds for my dyslexia. Mindmapping has been one of the main ones for me.

Dyslexics really need these workarounds, or adjustments, to their learning styles and opportunities. When these adjustments are made then you can get into school, understand the ideas and concepts, get into your books and get into expressing the incredible ideas that are in your mind.
