Study Skills Strategy

The benefits of a study skills strategy

We all hope for the best. To actually achieve our best, we need to plan for the best. We need to plan to succeed. I’m not just talking about grades her but all areas of life.

Is your dyslexic teen going to sit down and devise a study strategy that takes them from the first lesson to the final exam? For most people they only properly formulate this strategy in University, if at all. Getting to University can be a real challenge for dyslexic teens if they don’t learn this strategy now.

I’m going to ask you to make an investment into Study Skills Training for your son or daughter. It’s hard to say if it’s going to be expensive for you or not because it depends on what you compare it to.

FB Post

Robert Orben said “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.” Educating a dyslexic child is more costly than others in money, time and emotions.

Study Skills System

I had a think about what it might have cost us if we hadn’t paid the price to learn an effective  study system for my daughter?

  • 200+ of hours of unnecessary re-reading and rewriting
  • 100+ parent hours of revision supervision and assistance
  • 100+ parent hours of restructuring essays.
  • Weekends of stress
  • Interrupted holidays
  • Unnecessary failures
  • Frustration and resentment for how much it dominates life
dyslexic school day

This is literally £1000’s of pounds of negative impact. And its avoidable for most families if they bite the bullet and invest the time and effort to learn a more suitable system. It takes effort. Studying is hard work. But at least it’s doable if you have the right tools.

The benefits and outcomes are massive:

  • Increased Confidence
  • More social time at school
  • Less anxiety
  • More fun time together with your child
  • More independent and resilient child
  • Take notes confidently
  • Make presentations
  • Tell stories well
  • Write essays quickly and concisely
  • Remember things in tests
  • Remember essay structures
  • Get qualifications!

Services Offered

So what does our service offer?

Here’s a more complete explanation of what I’m offering through our course.

It’s a place to bring you together with others learning to ride ‘wild horses’. We will systematically take each challenge you are going to face and show you and your teen a way that will make it faster, fun and more fruitful with study skills. The course will be weekly in two blocks, a 4 week block with a break before we do the 6 week block. We’ll meet live on video conference each week for a study group for 45 minutes. I’m going to be with you encouraging and teaching you along the way.

Both you and your teenager are going to learn an efficient way of working that will let you ride that wild horse without undue force. You’ll probably get on better, sleep better and have better skin and much less stress.

Your teen will definitely get homework done quicker, revision completed effectively and will maximise their performance in exams.

When our daughter hit the roadblock of her exams we realised that although we were paying for subject tutors and that they were definitely helping it wasn’t going to make enough of a difference because she didn’t know how to remember and use the information she was learning.

That’s when we realised that we had to go back to basics and teach her study skills that would outlast her exams and serve her well throughout  life. These courses are our way of offering these study skills to your teenager as well.

You could both enroll in our Mind mapping Study Skill system for £499 ($888 AUD) and go on an adventure with us, that works.

Not everyone has access to this. There are only 24 places per intake and because of the live nature of the tutorials it only works for certain time zones so right now we’re opening the course up to the UK and Australia. We have tutorials on Tuesday evenings (your time) in August/Sept.

Here are your options:

The Full Study Strategy is taught in 3 blocks:

  • Block 1 is our beginners course (101) which takes 2 hours of videos
  • Block 2 trains you to map your lessons, homework and essays (201) and takes 4 weeks of videos and tutorials.
  • We like to give you a break to let it settle in and for practice before:
  • Block 3 trains you to do tests and exams (301) which is 6 weeks of videos and tutorials.

This full strategy costs £499. (Beginner 101 + Essays 201 + Exams 301)

Or you could start with the High School and Essay Strategy (Beginner 101 + Essays 201) for £299.

If you’re unsure I’d suggest you try our beginners course for £25.

Watch a recorded workshop which explains the course in more detail if you’d like to know more before securing your place.

We’d really love to hear from you so please take a moment to share your thoughts or any ways we could help you on your journey with dyslexia. Subscribe to our newsletter for more articles and videos.

Wondered what a dyslexic school day with study skills might look like?

I was lucky because when I was speaking to my daughter I knew what it was like when a dyslexic person learnt a visual study strategyI’ve done it and reaped the benefits for 25 years

My daughter, on the other hand, couldn’t imagine how much better school life would be if she just knew how to organise her mind. My wife and I had to deliberately tell her stories and build up a picture of what life would be like if she learnt to ride the wild horse and didn’t just let it run wild.

Would you like to know what a day in the life of a dyslexic teen ‘John’ would look like if he knew how to mind map effectively? We made a video of what we think it would look like. Every part of this story can be backed up by the experiences from our bands of riders.

In the next blog, I’ll tell you how to communicate your thoughts through mind mapping. If you haven’t subscribe to our email list yet, please subscribe now. We’ll send you valuable videos on Study Skills, mind mapping, dyslexia and high school, free.

Here is the 5 minutes video. It’s powerful to be able to visualise what is possible, and how much it’s worth it.

You can see from the video above how John is using mind mapping as a multi tool for all the little things that used to trip him up continually. He’s becoming an independent learner.

Communicate your thoughts

Communicate your thoughts

The power of being able to communicate your thoughts?

Why do I mind map? What’s the benefits of this little discipline? Oops. I said a controversial word 😉 Discipline. Us dyslexics have been misunderstood and on the wrong end of discipline a lot in the history of schooling. Thankfully we no longer get the belt  but we do need discipline, but a type that matches our way of working. Mind mapping is an unlikely source of discipline. How do you discipline a wild horse? Wisely!

communicate your thoughts

How does a mind map do that? In our course I explain how mind mapping forces us to use our natural talents towards creative thinking within a structured map. The mind map becomes like a ‘coach’. This video will explain how our minds are like “Zero Gravity Workshops”. This 6 minutes video literally blows people’s minds.

communicate your thoughts through mind mapping

What I want to share with you is how mind mapping can actually transform a person who is locked in a world of disorganisation. Choosing to take a moment to visually place your thoughts down on paper helps dyslexics unlock their genius and deliver real results to the world.

This is no simple task for a dyslexic mind. A creative mind can be wild, disorganised, anxious, and can ramble on to try and find the right point to communicate. Our students are finding they now have a way of working that helps them organise their thoughts, be calm, tell great stories, write concise essays, express their ideas in a way people understand, plan realistic projects, figure out what to do next and, above all, GET THINGS FINISHED.

If you want this way of working for your child then could I suggest that you take the idea of mind mapping seriously, invest time in it and learn how to do it with them. Have a look when the next band of wild horse riders depart. We only take 24 out on expeditions. More information is here

Study system

Intentional Study System

A final word for now

I believe every dyslexic who studies successfully has an intentional study system. We need one because our brains are wired to need external systems to help us stay on track. It’s like a law of nature. So much of a dyslexic brains is wired for the strategic and creative roles. For the systematic side of life and studying we need to rely on external ‘systems’

What is the number 1 most common dyslexic study system?
Mum. Yes. You.

You become their personal assistant. They outsource their planning and organisation to you. This is the most convenient way for dyslexic teens. But it’s far from ideal. It creates long lasting dependency and cripples your ability to make them independent learners.

There are better ways

Hoping for the best is not a study system. Hoping they will somehow cobble together something by the time they are 15 is not a reliable strategy. In fact we found it was a recipe for a lot of angry Sunday nights, wasted weekends finishing last minute projects, disappointments and unnecessary failure and pain. Not to mention an enormous waste of quality time.

This will be the last time I mention this new intake for a while because its filling up, and if you’ve not jumped at this opportunity now, it’s probably not the right time for you but there will be future opportunities.

study system

My final word would be to say I think you will probably need to be the one who carries your teen’s study plan initially and gradually hands it over to them to carry as they learn how to do it. I can say, hand on heart, that this investment is worth it. We’ve got a great video for you on helping your teen set their goals for the exams here…

I would really love it if you both joined us on the journey because I love crying at the stories of families who have had their chaos brought to peaceful order by this course.

I have a live workshop on creating a study strategy with your child coming up. If you’re undecided or have questions this is a great opportunity to meet face to face and ask questions and get any concerns cleared up.

We’d really love to hear from you so please take a moment to share your thoughts or any ways we could help you on your journey with dyslexia. Subscribe to our newsletter for more articles and videos.
